Mysql socket problem

Hi my friends....
I have a problem with mysql program.
This is the error when i type myql in terminal: Error 2002(HY000): can't connect to local mysql server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock'(111)
Could you please tell me what's the problem?

your mysqld server is not running

try '/etc/init.d/mysqld start' or something like that
