Mysql server installation

I have just 20 days of experience in Linux.I am installing mysql server in ubuntu 10.10 (32-bit) server without using internet. From mysql home page, i had downloaded .deb files and .tar.gz files but i cant install these files. It shows error like this

dpkg: regarding libmysqlclient16_5.1.49-1ubuntu8.1_i386.deb containing libmysqlclient16:
mysql-cluster-client-5.1 conflicts with libmysqlclient16
libmysqlclient16 (version 5.1.49-1ubuntu8.1) is to be installed.
dpkg: error processing libmysqlclient16_5.1.49-1ubuntu8.1_i386.deb (--install)
conflicting packages - not installing libmysqlclient16
Errors were encountered while processing:
libmysqlclient16_5.1.49-1ubuntu8.1_i386.deb

Any Suggestions?????

It appears like you are having conflicts with existing packages. Specifically with some of the mysql client libraries. Do you have MySQL installed already (client or server)? Is there any reason why you need/want to do this offline?

Basically if you need/want to perform the install offline you will need to manually resolve conflicts, especially since you are using a non standard package. I don't know what version of MySQL is in the packages with your version of Ubuntu, but it might be easier to just download from there and install the included version since it should not have any conflicts. If you have a need to use a different version you should probably go and understand what the conflicts you are getting mean, and if you resolve them by updating to a newer version if it will break anything else.

I'm not sure if you just don't have access to the Internet but if you have only 20 days of Linux experience, you're setting yourself up for failure making this more difficult than they have to be. Installing MySQL is as easy as breathing if you have Internet:

Code:
 sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install mysql-server
That will install MySQL and all it's dependancies as well so you can be up and running in now time. Then you can learn and configure your database(s).

If you don't have access to the Internet, then I recommend you find / download all the individual dependancy packages by hand:

Code:
sudo dpkg -i <pkg_name>
If you can download the files from MySQL, then you should be able to download the files from apt. Also when patches / updates come out for MySQL, since you're not installing it via apt-get, it will not auto update with your system. Just install it from the internet using 'apt-get' as shown above. It will save yourself time and frustration.

Post install, there's a script you can run to secure / configure MySQL as well. No idea if that's available if you install using the .deb file.
