mounting root file system as ro after mounted rw

Is this possible to do?

I tried mount -n -o remount ro
and
I get
mount: / is busy

All I'm trying to do is mounting my root system as read only and use ramdisks
then mount them at /var /tmp

Any alternate suggestions for this theme, if not possible to remount the / as ro after
mounted as rw?

You should consider going with multiple partitions such that "root" can be mounted read only from the start. Mount /home /var /tmp all separately. Some installers can't do this. Debian can get you pretty close without having to do a bunch of boot scripting.
