Lightbulb Mock DNS Infrastructure Setup

Hello All,

So I want to setup a mock DNS Infrastructure to model the Internet's DNS infrastructure. I'm not asking about how to setup DNS and all that, I have a plan on how I think things work and want test my knowledge and learn a bit in the process.

My question however is in relation to having several dns servers talk to each other when I only have one system in which I can use for the gateway.

The plan is to setup a VM Server that hosts several Virtual DNS Servers. Each server will be placed on a different subnets to model the Internet somewhat. There will be some ROOT DNS servers and sub-level dns servers. I thought about setting up a Linux box as a gateway and having several virtual interfaces for each subnet (i.e. eth0 eth0:1 eth0:2 eth0:3 etc). I also have a two Cisco 3600 Series Routers that I could use as well.

I am looking for suggestions to accomplish this setup with only one VMWare server hosting several VM on different subnets. The reason for the different subnets is for traffic segregation as well was to model the Internet as best possible given a limited amount of resources.

I know that this won't be seen practical to some but I would at least like to try to model Internet DNS on a small scale just for the fun it. You never learn if you don't try. If I had two VM Servers and Two Gateways I could model it a bit better. However I only have one system that I can use for the VM's. Thanks in advance for any suggestions

You could use something like PacketTracer and set up your whole network. It lets you set up your dns servers, but not an actual server. You could probably use that in conjunction with a real DNS server.
