minikube hangs at starting vm

I'm trying to run minikube on Ubuntu 17.10 with KVM. Running:

Code:

$minikube start --vm-driver kvm2 --logtostderr

the last log message is 'Machine state: Running' but it never returns to a bash prompt.

Trying to run mminikube dashboard gives:

Error creating kubeConfig: auth info "minikube" does not exist

What is this auth info it's referring to?
