Max no of files within ht kernel

Hi ,,

Does anyone know if there is a limit on the max no of files for the linux kernel .. running redhat 4.5 kernel version 2.6.9-55.EL

I have set it the number of open files (-n) 65535

But when i update this value it doesn't take effect...
I want run > 1024 threads !

Any ideas much appreciated.
Thanks
