mandriva fails to start /etc/init.d/mysqld

Hi. First post in here, kinda nervous.

My problem is this: I followed "The perfect setup guide for Mandriva 2007" over at howtoforge, but when I try to start mysqld with /etc/init.d/mysqld start , all I get is "No such file or catalog".

And since I'm quite new to Linux, I'm not sure where to turn.

Code:
ls /etc/init.d
gives me
Code:
/etc/init.d@
Does that mean that there's nothing there?

Try the following
Code:
$cd /etc/init.d
$ls
or
Code:
$ls /etc/init.d/
