Main reasons to migrate from RHEL 5.5 to RHEL 6.0
Hi everyone! This will be my first post in LQ, and I hope that as soon as possible I will be helping others with their linux issues, but right now I need your help.
I did some research about the main reasons for upgrading from RHEL 5 to 6, but mostly what I found was generic statements. I do understand that there were security fixes, stability improvements, but I couldn't find detailed information about it. I never migrated a server in a corporate environment. Only tried distros and versions at home. But now I need to tell the bosses why they should upgrade their servers, and I am not too sure what to state. Below are the Linux distros I am responsible to check if it is worth upgrading (all RHEL based): CentOS release 5.5 (Final) Fedora release 12 (Constantine) Fedora release 14 (Laughlin) Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5 (Tikanga) RedHat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.3 (Carthage) RedHat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.7 (Carthage) Scientific Linux release 6.0 (Carbon) Scientific Linux release 6.2 (Carbon) Taking the opportunity: What you guys take in consideration when thinking about upgrade the kernel? Sorry for any mistakes in my english.... |
no real reasons except for newer versions of software
will the OLD programs port to rhel6.3 ? if not easily then do not upgrade there is still a few years left on rhel5.8 i WOULD upgrade from 5.5 to 5.8 though ( if possible) now CentOS IN NOT RED HAT !!!! in that the SUPPORT is VERY VERY VERY different centos 5.5 IS UNSUPPORTED !! and has not had a security update in over a year REPLACE IT NOW !!! Fedora 12 and 14 ARE BOTH VERY UNSUPPORTED and using them in a corporate environment aught to be a criminal felony !!! fedora 12 is 5 versions OUT OF DATE and has NOT had a security update in 2+ years REPLACE IT TODAY!!!!!!!!!!! Scientific Linux 6.0 UNSUPPORTED and has NOT had a security update in about a year REPLACE IT NOW !!! SL 6.2 is currently supported |
While I understand and share your frustration with Linux users and their apparent lack of running anything current it simply does not do to use all-caps words like you do all the time and especially not when talking to new Linux users.
Warning: Please quit shouting. |
John VV,
thank you so much for your straight answer! I didn't get the part where you said that CentOS is not RHEL, though! Isn't based on it? I really would appreciate if you clarify that to me! Reading the moderators' post I guess my work isn't the only place to run out-of-date linux, am I right? Talking about the moderator and the forum, I gotta let it registered that I am impressed with the cooperation and seriousness of this forum! It's really amazing! |
