Mailing List

I am an administrator of a large organization of about 30,000 members. We are looking for a way to send information to our members via email.

I am not sure what will fit the bill exactly. I was thining building a linux box would be better suited. I have read that Exhchange 2007 doesnt deal with mailing lists very well.

I have been playing on my test box today configureing postfix and mailman.

Fist I did postfix, the mail server working great. Im not sure if i really need to do this.

So then i configured mailman. Built a list and am trying to send out tests. Idealy I would like to create a invisable list where our members see us sending a message to the list and reply back to me only. (cant see other members) Does mailman fit this bill?

Right now im fighting the issue of getting this when sending test messages:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: this is a MM test
Sent: 3/3/2009 3:17 PM

The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:

'' on 3/3/2009 3:17 PM
550 5.1.1 <>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table

Do i need to reconfire something? Am i righ that i could get rid of postfix or is mailman interfacing with it?

need some direction.

Postfix is a mail transfer agent (MTA) and you need an MTA of some sort, and since you have postfix configured, you may as well stick with it.

Mailman will do what you suggest. You can change the sender to be the poster (see general options - make replies to Poster). You can restrict members' ability to use the list by requiring all but wanted senders to be moderated, and discarding moderated posts.

Not sure about the error message, since we don't know how you've set postfix up. If you aren't using virtual users, do you have a user "test" on your system?
