Mail not leaving server / Postfix

Hi

I've been handed over a server which is running, Debian(lenny)and Postfix amongst the other standard stuff. But we use Goggle Apps for our email.

The problem i get and i bet the answer is easy. If an email is sent to a domain being hosted on the box, then it actually never leaves the box to arrive at Google Apps

All i need postfix for is sending emails from like forms and also to send emails from 12all mailing list software. It does not need to have any emails delivered locally at all. So it's just to send out going emails for those two things.

I'm not sure if it's a postfix error or the local DNS is not set right

As i a total Newbie most i do is follow instructions or use webmin to do the bits like setup a new virtual server etc which does all the bits mainly.

I've no idea where to begin

Thanks

Nadeem

The most common problem with this is your ISP's port blocking. Check with your cable company to see which ports they block, I bet it includes port 25. This is they key port to send mail. Its awkward because you could actually send mail, because it only blocks incoming 25, but EVERY sendmail program requries to have connection, and response, from the address before sending, mainly a security issue. You can't do much but get someone else to host your mail, or get someone to re-direct port 25 to something like port 50000, which is never blocked. You will have to change your config to listen on port 50000. If your ISP does not block 25, check your local port-forwarding. Ensure that 135 sends to your local ip of choice.

Hi

No i think you've misunderstood the question

The server is a dedicated server at an isp which is not blocking port 135.

Problem

If i setup a form on a website or get system emails

1) If addressed to a domain thats hosted on the server i.e abc@hostedodmain.com. Then this email never leaves the postfix queue / never arrives at gmail mailbox for abc@hosteddomain.com

2) We take the same form or system alert and say send to abc@hosteddomainonanotherserver.com or any other, gmail, hotmail, yahoo email address etc (as long as it;s not another domain hosted on that server. The this email will arrive at the gmail account for the domianhostedonanotherserver.com or any other email address

So the problem appears to be some kind of routing i.e as if the server does not understand to send emails for hosted domain to an external email system and is routing them locally or something

a) I never setup the server
b) I have very little knowledge of linux but have tried googling
c)When i add a new domain to the account i'm using virtiualmin/ webmin which basically setups up all the bits i.e db's etc apart from this issue

Thanks

Nadeem

Ok I see the problem now. The server sending emails to itself never work. I will research this problem.

Well i'm making that assumption that when it's sending mail and fines the domain on itself it send it to itself without checking external DNS which would tell it emails go to google apps. But i'm no expert hence why i'm here

This.
If the SMTP server is set to be responsible for the domain then it will not relay the mail, but attempt local delivery.

Probably neither.
DNS is only relavent once the mail is eligible for relaying.
My guess is that postfix has been configured incorrectly to treat your hosted domains as local.
The mail logfile (usually '/var/log/mail.log') should show you what the problem really is.
Check out the $mydestination directive in /etc/postfix/main.cf

It is quite common to have multi-host machines also provide mail services, so maybe one of your helpful 'wizards' has configured that for you when you clicked the "I don't wan't to know how it works, just do it all for me" button
