Question Loopback Device - Maximum Size

This seems like a relatively simple question, but the answer seems to elude everyone: What is the MAXIMUM SIZE of a Linux loopback device (not counting any specific filesystem limitations)? Is it the maximum size of a linux block device?

im not sure but it may be infinite. That would mean the biggest size your filesystem accepts.

Hmmmm....if there's anything I've learned in computing science it's that with any real-world physical machine...there's no way to implement "infinite".

Is there a reason why your asking this -real case example, or is it just one of life's ponderables.

I'm looking at setting up a partitionless bootable disk...just to prove it can be done. What I've got so far is a loopback device with 256K offset ("comfy" space for embedding grub2) and LVM on the loopback. LVM has an 8EB physical and logical volume limit so I'm hoping loopback won't provide another layer of limitation on top of that...
