you sure it was 1. actual technical support, or 2. just (first tier) customer support?
if 1., that would indeed be appalling.
if 2., it is totally normal.
those customer support guys are trained to always support mainstream only with a standard repertoire of answers, and always look where the money is (i.e. if they can sell you an "upgrade" instead of actually fixing things, that's what they'll do).
Even mentioning Linux to these people, or the idea of running a home server, is not recommended. Worst case scenario, they'll make you upgrade to a business susbscription.

of course i have no experience with "slingshot", only from my own ISP.
