logging file creation and deletion?

Hi,
Does anyone know if it is possible to log to /var/log whenever a file is created or deleted? I am guessing that the settings for logging are in /etc/syslog.conf but I can not find a simple explanation of the settings available.

Not a straight forward way to do this i guess.
But with some minimal programming you can use FAM (File alteration monitor) and send the output to /var/log
