localhost folder?

This is probably a stupid question but if I'm running a server on my Ubuntu machine, and I want to test it out on my machine by going to http://localhost/index.html, where do I put the index.html file? Is there a default special location?

It's /var/www by default on ubuntu/debian. See the DocumentRoot directive in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default.
