linux to use windows dns server

Hello!

I would like our linux servers to be able to use our Windows DNS server to do host lookups, rather then using /etc/hosts. I want to be able to ping 'server1.example.com' and to do a dns lookup from our Windows server. Problem is, it doesnt work, even though I put our Windows DNS server into /etc/resolv.conf

Is there somewhere else I need to specify to use the Windows server for DNS lookups?

We're using various Linux (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,

Check /etc/nsswitch.conf if you have a dns entry for hosts, like:
Code:
hosts:   files dns

Check your firewalls. Is UDP port 53 open on your Linux machines? Is UDP port 53 open on the Windows server?

Might sound silly, but you did use the server IP in resolv.conf and not the server name?

Hello turbo_acura,

Can you connect to the Windows DNS?

Check if you can resolve LQ domain with the Windows DNS:
Code:
$ host www.linuxquestions.org 192.168.100.1
(Assuming 192.168.100.1 could be your Windows DNS IP)
