Linux Print Spooling disabling

After a couple of days the Spooling on printer queues becomes disabled. So i have to disable the queue then enable it again.

I don't want to have to do this every day for the 120 odd printers that we have.

I don't mind using a script to do this but would rather fix the source of the problem rather than provide another solution.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Regards

SAMBA is a server to implement file / print sharing to windows clients. Samba will use whatever spooler software you are using.

Since you are using SUSE I expect you are using CUPS, which is a very fine print spooler, but SUSE 9 is rather old. You might need to download a new CUPS and compile from source. Be careful with that, there are a lot of special Ghostscript interactions going on with CUPS. Also, I haven't compile CUPS since Apple bought it.

In the meantime, try http://localhost:631 and see what CUPS says about itself. You might find the reason for cups disabling the printers there. I've found CUPS to be very stable, though sometimes PDF printing can get weird on certain distributions. Also watch the /var/log/cups logs for clues.
