Question Is There Any Way to Change ARCH. in Ubuntu Server??

Hello;

I recently setup a server after spending a lot of times trying to get Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 working with Xen (not knowing there was no more support available)..
Any way in short I had to re-install this server and put ver. 8.04 on it BUT now for some reason I wound up with i686 Architecture and Not the AMD64!
(I know I should've paid more attention to the CD which was marked wrong...)

So now when I do uname -m I get i686 instead of x86_64.

I must have x86_64 because many commands refuse to work and return error.
Now my question is ;
Is there any way I could change the Arch without re-installing the whole thing?
Is it possible?

Thank you in advance...

PS I tried;
make ARCH=x86_64 menuconfig
and many of the above combo to No avail?!

(it says: make *** No rule to make target menuconfig Stop.)
Thanks!

May be there are better alternatives available that I don't know off but I would re-install the thing using x86_64 distribution even if there was a way to change it to it. You could end up in a nasty dependency hell or something worse.

Thank you sir;
I did just that and it is working great now.
(really I was afraid of the Grub start acting up again but the re-install went smooth and am setting up Xen now).
Thanks.
