Try to ping Google with its Public DNS IP addresses 8.8.8.8

ping 8.8.8.8

check the /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all Parameter whether you have dropped ping request

5.4 is old VERY OLD
the current in the old 5 series is RHEL5.8
you are a few years OUT OF DATE

and the current version of the NOT FREE Red Hat is RHEL 6.3

you DID buy the required support contract ???? right ????

if not you do not install any software

Also RHEL is a very manuall network configuration
as in YOU have to edit the text config. files BY HAND

please read the OLD , very old rhel5 install documentation
https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/...erprise_Linux/

but mind you rhel5 will not work well on very new hardware , it is to old
