Installing Linux on HP proliant server
Hi All,
I want to install Linux red hat 5 (x86_64) on HP ProLiant DL320 G3 server, to make it a logs server.
Note: I know how to install the red hat on a normal PC but I am not trying on proliant server.
I don't know if I need to use smart start CD before starting the installation or I need to UPGRADE BIOS/FIRMWARE COMPONENTS of server. this is my questions only.
How I can starting to installing Linux on HP proliant server?
Thanks & kind Regards

You should not require any special measures. Have you encountered any problems? It seems somewhat strange to be asking for help before you appear to have tried an installation.

If you want to upgrade firmware and you need to configure RAID first you go with smart start CD and then install redhat as usual..

Hi,
Try...and see if you get into any error.
If you are looking for official statements, RHEL 5 is not supported on G3 servers by neither RH or HP...but that means little if you are not looking for official support from the vendors.
Most likely, the only problem you can run into is in case you install HP PSP for getting some kind of HW monitoring and driver updates...be very carefull in case you want to install PSP as you will probably need and old version that might not be compatible with either the OS or the HW.
Good luck
best regards
jose

Hi,
Are you going to install with a DVD or are you planning to kickstart the server?
If you are installing it from the DVD/CDs then its nothing different than installing a desktop PC.
Thanks,
Abi

I recommend you 1st upgrade the BIOS and RAID firmware to the latest on the HP site. Then you simply just download the RHEL 5 (64-bit) and walk through the install. It should be painless.
It should also work without the firmware upgrades but it's not recommended. You can hurt having a updated firmware and RAID controller firmware. Just being safe and pro-active IMHO.

First of all You should configure storage. If You have one disk just boot CD and install RedHat, if You planning to have RAID 0,1,1+0,5 You should configure RAID controller, during booting, after HP logo press F8 to go into RAID controller. Setup RAID, save it and install operating system like on normal PC.
I have the same server, so if You need some support You can ask.
cheers

dude,
1.) To install RH Linux, you don't required any HW up-gradation. Straight away go ahead and install the OS.
2.) To configure RAID, you have to goto the System Board Management interface to configure a HW RAID. Create a virtual array and mark the two hard disk. Save and quit. RAID configuration finished. Again your system will reboot and you can see the RAID controller detected.
3.) Up on the installation you could able to find only one hard disk device which is pointed to both the phy HD.
4.) By chance you don't have hard ware RAID, you can create software RAID using mdadm (meta data admin) tool to create SW RAID.

Hi All,
when i check the installation instruction of BIOS Firmware and Firmware Storage Controller on HP site i found this
BIOS - System ROM
"
This Enhanced SoftPaq contains utilities that can be used to restore and/or update the system ROM on the HP ProLiant Server.
1. Download the Enhanced SoftPaq to a directory on a system running Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, or Microsoft Windows XP and change to that directory.
2. From that drive and directory, execute the downloaded Enhanced SoftPaq file simply by double clicking on the SPxxxxx file and follow the installation wizard to complete the Enhanced SoftPaq installation process. At the end of a successful installation of the Enhanced SoftPaq, a web page will automatically appear to provide you with the different methods for restoring and/or upgrading the firmware on the system."
Firmware - Storage Controller
"Use DOS-bootable USB key to perform the upgrade and follow the below instructions:
1. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive.
2. Obtain a DOS-bootable USB key.
3. Execute the downloaded file to extract its contents to the DOS-bootable USB key.
4. Boot the ProLiant server with the HP 8 internal Port SAS HBA with RAID using the DOS-bootable USB key.
5. Once the server has booted and displays the command prompt, change to the USB key and execute "update p".
6. Upon completion of flashing, the following message will be displayed:
PLEASE REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM. PROGRAMMING COMPLETE!!
7. Remove all diskettes/USB keys and reboot the server.
8. For additional instructions, refer to "Update.txt" that is extracted from the SoftPaq."
when i can starting the upgrade BIOS and RAID firmware?, after install the linux or before.
Note: the OS available on server now is MSWS 2008 R2 ENT ED SP2 64 BIT.
thanks

HP also puts out a bootable firmware update CD, I would just download that and let it update anything which needs updating before installing.
