Installed Proftpd, not working as Service
Hey everyone,
I recently installed ProFTPD on a Centos Linux with configure,make,install...(yum install proftpd didnt work)
Hmm, i installed everything it works but i cant control it through Service like, Service proftpd start, reload, stop like i used to on older servers...
Can anyone tell me how i can recognize proftpd as a system service?
Thanks,
gal.

Likely the startup script is not in the right place or is formatted incorrectly. You might want to install it from an rpm (rpmforge has it), you can either add rpmforge or download the rpm directly and install it.

http://dag.wieers.com/rpm/packages/proftpd/
Click on the version you need, likely one of:
proftpd-1.3.1-1.el4.rf.i386.rpm
proftpd-1.3.1-1.el4.rf.x86_64.rpm
proftpd-1.3.1-1.el5.rf.i386.rpm
proftpd-1.3.1-1.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm
Depending on your architecture and version of centos you're running 4/5.

In my experience using proftpd in slackware, I executed this command via console each time I want to start it:
# proftpd &
may be it's too complicated but I enjoy it because I rarely use this service. CMIIW.
best regards
