Installed new LAMP server

I've just create a new LAMP server and tried connecting to it from one of the client pcs on the network using mysql-query-browser

I typed in 192.168.1.1 (ip address of the lamp server), typed in the username and password, and it said it could not connect. I tried pinging the server and it pings ok. Maybe I got the port number wrong 3306? How do I determine which port number I need to use?

With the description you gave I'm not sure if you are trying to login to the server or the MySQL service. Some things to check.

Ensure that you have a user setup for the MySQL service.
Ensure that rlogin and/or rsh (or what ever scheme you use is set to on)

e.g. (as root) chkconfig rsh --list

Hope this may help.

When you set up the mysql server did you tell it to listen on the network? A lot of linux systems have the mysql server listening on local sockets only.
