Question Installed LAMP+F. What now?(Ubuntu 7.04)

Hi everybody,

I've used allot of Linux distros, and I'm a Windoze power-user.
I hate Windows because Microsoft spreads lies about other OS's,
while its own is (un)arguably the worst.
That said, a fellow Linux user and I(we're both little more than newbies, admittedly)
started an unofficial charity for the summer.
We collect 'retired' pcs, load them with Linux,
and give them to the needy.

We'll be using Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Freespire, and minimalist distros.

That said, we already have donated two PCs.

Our problem:
I bought an old p4 with 256mb of RAM, and added a 200gb hd to use it as
backup and a server for the charity site.
I loaded it with Ubuntu 7.04,
and followed the instructions at:
howtoforge (dot) com(/)ubuntu_lamp_for_newbies
(it uses PHPMyAdmin)
And I added ProFTPd. My question now is how do I administrate these
apps, and load website files onto it?
Goals:
Set it up as an FTP server
Set it up as an HTTP server
Secure it
Use Drupal or WordPress to create site(wordpress seems easier)

Can anyone help us with this? Can you point me to any tutorials or
howtos?

I say try FTP server to upload files. Use apache to serve web sites. Open an FTP account for http root folder. Design your web site. Upload it to server with this FTP account. You can manage your FTP server with a remote login program like putty, via using SSH. But you should have enough knowledge to manage your FTP server. I dont know about wordpress, druba whatever it is sounds like a CMS system. I say load your apache with joomla.

Uh....

I got that much, but I'm not sure yet
what each app in LAMP+proftpd do, and how to use them to post a site,
and a private FTP. I need examples, or something a little more in depth.

Thanks.

Ok. Phpmyadmin for mysql it is a web base database manipulation program

Apache. You dont need any program for this. Just configure the server with your needs. /etc/httpd.conf (or something like that search it in your local file system.

PHP. same as apache no need to manage.

proFTP I am not quite familiar with proFTP. I use pureFTP but I know there are some GUI programs for managing proFTP server.

I am not sure exactly, but each user in the system have a ftp user account, if you installed proFTP.

You may create a user whose home folder is http root folder. Then login the ftp server and you may login with this account and upload your files. Then run your web site.

I dont know if this post helps.
