Ok first I would like to sorry if this is real easy. (I have only been using linux for 2 days) I have been given the task to install vsftpd on one of our servers that has a version of debian on it (talk about trial by fire) I have no experiance with linux. I have downloaded the program and unpacked it. I have no idea what to do after that. I have root access. I am in the directory for the vsftpd i typed "make" and recieve the message,

gcc -c main.c -02 -Wall -W Wshadow -idirafter dummyinc
make: gcc: Command not found
make: *** [main.o] Error 127

You don't need to do any of that to install vsftpd on Debian.

Just run this command (as root):
Code:
apt-get install vsftpd
That automatically downloads the vsftpd binary package, unpacks it, and installs it.

That was the first thing I tried. There is a problem with our proxy. Someone else is trying to fix that problem.
