Install ubuntu server onto USB Flash drive

Hi all,

I'm trying to free up as many SATA ports as possible. So since I have a couple USB 2.0 ports directly on my MB I want to install the OS directly to the USB flash drive. So I will be running Ubuntu Server 12.04. It won't be running anything heavy duty (Samba, CrashPlan, SSH, Webmin) so I'm thinking I don't need swap space and can set the main partition as tmpfs in fstab in order to cut down writes to the flash drive and extend its life. Has anyone done this? I'm I going to see a huge hit to performance? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I've run Linux from a USB drive many times (one of my laptops has a busted hard drive). Disk I/O (especially writes) are an order of magnitude slower than an internal HDD/SSD, but other than that, you should be fine.

Watch where you install GRUB, I believe the default for the Ubuntu installer is /dev/sda.
