Just follow the instructions the installer gives you with respect to partitioning and formatting
the right device and where to install the bootloader. If you can't taint any internal hard disk or if the bootloader should be kept with the installation anyway then the bootloader must be installed on the external USB disk. To be able to boot from the external USB disk it has to be seen as selectable medium by your BIOS and it should be set as the first medium to boot from.

External USB disks are seen as SCSI(-emulation) devices (/dev/sd.* device names) so for the copied installation to work you need to find out (and adjust) if it uses device UIDs, labels or device names in the /boot/grub/ GRUB configuration and /etc/fstab. Again, to be able to boot from the external USB disk on another machine it has to be seen as selectable medium by that machines BIOS and it should be set as the first medium to boot from. If your external USB disk is large enough to hold what's on the internal disk you could just 'dd if=/dev/internal_disk_device_name of=/dev/external_disk_device_name'. See 'man dd' for optimization of parameters (block size and such) or the way convoluted
