Increment backup using Dump

Hello everyone,

We are using DUMP to backup our servers. We have been using the -a flag to auto-size and append. It seems like that is working but I noticed this morning that one folder is missing from the tape, suggesting that the backup is not appending and the tape is not running to the end before it over writes.

an example of the backup command we are using is:

dump -1ua -f /dev/st0 /

We increment by the 1 for everyday that we run the incremental backup so on the second day it would look like this:

dump -2ua -f /dev/st0 /

If anyone can help me figure out why the backups aren't appending correctly, I would greatly appreciate it. Maybe we need to create labels for each incremental run?

Among other things, I believe your tape is rewinding after each use. If you use /dev/st0n, which is the non-rewinding device (n), then it will sit where it is left and continue on from there.

You indicate "we" and "servers" in plural. At some point, it can become a pain managing backups of multiple servers with your own individual commands and scripts. Have you considered looking at some sort of backup management software? My personal suggestion would be Amanda. You can find links here:
