importing users from active directory into openldap and get working with samba

I've been at this for a while, but it seems like there is no "real" solution for how this is done.

In a perfect scenario, it would be amazing to have openldap and AD able to sync live together... (I am not aware of anyway possible, except maybe http://acctsync.sourceforge.net/, but that seems incredibly "hacked" together).

For an immediate solution, I have tried the pwdump method (kinda scary using that to export active directory records), and trying to use smbldap-migrate-accounts-pwdump to import those... of course the perl script will not run on any setup I try... (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...errerid=154107)

Can anyone give me an alternative solution? I have looked into hp's metadirectory project. but I'm not sure how that will create the users smb info when they get imported?... anyways, any help would be much appreciated. I'm about to go walk around with a laptop, and just add users manually... eeeeeeeeekkkk!

I need some information before i can try to help you.
Do you really need openldap? Which domain functional level?
In my setup i use samba/kerberos to authenticate users directly into AD, i use it also for squid.
My domain is at 2003 server functional level, anything higher will be a trouble, lower would be ok.

Looking for a solution to import windows users into ldap server

Hello,

Has there been any more progress on getting windows users into an ldap server? I am currently running a Linux server for my department and need to create an LDAP server which mirrors the username/password information for all of us as it is stored in the windows server here. I have the openldap server up and running on Ubuntu 8.04 and it works great; I now need to find some way to import user info into this from windows.

I've seen discussions of using ldifde.exe to export the AD users into an ldif file. Is this the simplest way to go about it?

Thanks in advance for any input you may have.
