imap migration

Hi,

i must migrate all websites/webapps from one server to another.

With two plesk-systems there is the plesk-mogrator.
When however one of the two is not plesk how do i migrate imap-accounts easily?

I found some tools but hopefully someone has practical experience with a certain tool.
It might be a bit problematicaly because the email-address must stay the same.

I would be grateful for any hint.
Both servers run Ubuntu with Postfix and Dovecot.

BTW i did move a couple IMPA-accounts with hand through thunderbird but that takes a very long time.

Regards,
Jan

Which 'some tools' did you find?? imapsync is one that works nicely, and there are several others, but without knowing what you've actually done/tried/researched, there's not a lot we can tellyou past what you can easily find with your own Internet search.

Thanks TBOne,

i did not try one yet. After i started the thread i found imapsync, seems quite helpfull.

Just wondered if anyone has experience with a certain tool.

First end of december beginning of januar i must migrate so i am now collecting information,
after that i will test with a few of my own imap-accounts.
I plan to move everything from a Server with Plesk to one where i install ISPConfig.

Regards,
Jan

Hi,

i will rephrase my question.

I have Domains with IMAP-accounts all postfix/dovecot.

I need to move the domains to a new server which is no big deal, Webspace and Database, link them on the new place together and it is working.

With IMAP-Accounts it is a bit more difficult, some have loads of email up to 10 Gb.
I am looking for a tool/methode/service that is easy to use. There are loads of descriptions I had poed someone
in the forum has done this before and has a hint for a simple way.

If i load all emails locally, stop syncing, move the domain and mail to the other server and then sync with the new server
would that work? Or is this a way to slow methode for large mailboxes?

Regards,
Jan

You said previously you wanted to know if someone had experience with 'a certain tool', yet didn't bother to tell us what that 'certain tool' was. You mention NOTHING about what you have done/tried so far, using what processes, so how do you expect us to guess as to what would be a better way? The size of a mailbox has exactly zero bearing on migrating the account/information other than it's just going to take time to copy things from one server to another.

Again: imapsync does EXACTLY what you're after; it migrates users from one IMAP server to another. Not sure where you're stuck or confused.

Thanks TBOne,

i know it is a year later, in the past time with corona a lot of other things were more important.

At the moment i have read the documentation that is with imapsync but i have not been able to test it.

"do not touch a running system" is now no longer a good advise because due to the increased number of
updates in every part of the software-stack things are getting instable.
So i need to update servers and software much more often to keep things running, mostly a non-paid workload.

I do appriciate your help, very much but as i said the hope on a simple solution was there, i guess
simpler then with imapsync is an illusion.

Kind regards,
Jan

If you haven't actually DONE anything, why are you thinking that imapsync is so hard to use?? Unless you put in the work, nothing is going to get done.

Hi,

"Unless you put in the work, nothing is going to get done."
If one knows that, it is me, I work from 9.00 till 24.00 almost 7 days a week not
only on paid projects but also for free or extreme low-paid projects like
a youth footballclub (my social touch).

Moving data/programms from one server to the other is quite normal for me, but
since some servers are making trouble as they were not updated soon enough i must
reconsider how to spread risk, meaning that i may drop Plesk and therefore lose the
migrationtool that i need mainly for imap-accounts, the rest is made step by step
manually, sometimes in combination with upgrades, in order to keep all components of the
softwarestack uptodate and fitting together.

I will test with imapsync and i may ask you to please not have such prejudices on people you do not know.

Regards,
Jan

No prejudices at all, but think about what you're saying, which is essentially, "I have a tool that will do what I need, but I haven't actually used it, yet I want something easier than the thing I haven't tried."
