hugepages changes in sysctl.conf not reflected in /proc/meminfo

Running RHEL 5.6, 64-bit.

We made a change in /etc/sysctl.conf to enable hugepages as follows:

vm.nr_hugepages = 10240

and I ran "sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.conf" to activate the changes.

However, the when I look in /proc/meminfo, the change is not reflected (it still shows the old value). Starting a new session doesn't make a difference -- only after rebooting the server will I see the new value.

Is the change actually taking effect and just not reflected in meminfo, or does reloading sysctl.conf really not do anything?

thanks!

Hugepages must be composed of contiguous (normal) pages. After a system has been running for some time this may be difficult to achieve. Always easier to achieve at clean boot.
