html and php not rendering with folders locked down with ntlm_auth

I've spent many hours trying to get mod ntlm auth to work on a CentOS 5 box (apache 2.2) and a Windows Server 2003 AD environment, and have FINALLY SUCCEEDED!!! :-D

however...

Any php or html files in my secured directory are not rendered right.

Here's my directory info from httpd.conf:

<Directory "/var/www/html/pvt">
AuthName "NTLM Authentication thingy"
NTLMAuth on
NTLMBasicAuthoritative on
NTLMAuthHelper "/usr/bin/ntlm_auth --helper-protocol=squid-2.5-ntlmssp"
NTLMBasicRealm MFC
require valid-user
</Directory>

A <? phpinfo(); ?> page will render fine oin an unsecured folder, but will show up as source code in the lockdown area. The same goes for html, the tags being shown as plain text.

The folders under /var/www/html are owned by apache:apache with 755 permissions.

Any ideas? I feel like I've crossed the ocean, now just have a swamp or two to wade through!
