Question .htaccess help: can't get mediawiki working on subdomain

I'm installing mediawiki and I want it to work on a subdomain with short URLs. This page with instructions is linked to in the mediawiki setup, but they don't include instructions for a subdomain. Google pops up quite a few results, but none of those work (nor are any newer than 2010 and I've tried all of them through the third page).

If someone can help me figure this out, not only will it answer the question for me, but I'll update the mediawiki manual page as I have a feeling most people wanting to install this way end up just giving up.

I've never used MW so I apologize in advance. Is this what you want to do?

This page shows how to do a short URL with a subdomain like

mediawiki, subdomain
