How to preserve all server configurations

Hello All,

What is the best method to preserve all my server configurations ? Everything from users, groups, samba configurations, fstab, BIND ...

To take it a step further, can I preload this configuration in my own custom build ?

Thanks in advance.

Thumbs up

you can backup the configuration files using rsync and cron

other method would be having backup of partition or hard disk you are using

Would just backing up everything in "/etc" be enough ?

For example, if I built a new server, would replacing the /etc folder with my old server's /etc work ? I'm just wondering about other directories as I am not a Linux expert by any means, I just want to save my current configurations.

thanks

Hi,

I will give you example:

Suppose you have three servers:

1.NFS
2.FTP
3.HTTP

Configure the all the three servers and note down the names of files you are using to configure server;just make copy of it to other backup system...

Now in case in original server crashes then you need just install the new server or new package for it and copy backed up files....

For example

1.For NFS

You need to backup
/etc/exports

2.For HTTP
You need to backup
/etc/httpd

and

/var/www/html

3.FTP

/etc/vsftpd

regards,

Prayag
