We are new at Linux so we need help on making mirror on two SATA disk's after default installation.

We have disk1 (sda) and disk2 (sdb), and FC5 is instaled on SDA with LVM Linux partition.

We would like to make (software RAID1) mirror on disk2 but we alredy have FC5 installed.

I had this problem before. Fedora 5 does not include the raid modules in the boot ramdisk. Therefore you will not be able to mount the root partition as a RAID device until you are able to create your own boot ramdisk.

What you will need to do is create the raid device that will contain the root partition on the second disk. Make the raid device with the firts disk missin. Copy the root partition to the new raid device. Add the raid device to the grub boot loader and make sure you can boot off of it with no problems. Reformat the first disk then copy the partition table of the second disk to the first disk. Add the root partition of the first disk to the raid device. Last, you'll need to setup the grub MBR on the first disk and make sure the BIOS can boot from both disks in case one fails. It's an involved process. It's funny how the Fedora install allows you to set up RAID but if you want to set up RAID after it's difficult. Ubuntu 6.06 allows you to add RAID without any problems because its ramdisk has the raid drivers in it. That's one of the things that impressed me about it.

It would take me too much time to write it. We can do it via telephone conference. I can also remote into your system if you prefer. It'll be a little time consuming so I gladly accept donations. Let me know. Ram
