how to know how much data is moved on network

Hey there all. i have a simple python script that updates a database on our server. i need to know exactly how many bytes travel from said unit to the server in a period of time ( when it makes the update ). Is there a simple command line app that will let me start a net traffic monitor and then stop it after the process and give me a total number of bytes transmitted ?

kinda like a stopwatch.. except for measuring net traffic instead of time.

thanks

Might also want to check out Netwatch. Will show you traffic in real time
