How to check server log file ?

Hi,

I am using cent os 5. I want to check the activity of my server log files. Like when the service was up or down, what was the time when the server was shutdown and the time when the server was up and its rest of activities etc etc
Code:
# tail –f /var/log/messages
the above code does not show me the full log status

thanks in advance,
garden

Hi gardenair,

/var/log/message file contains info messages. there is no single file which contain information about all services status.

different service log stored in different files. like mysql service log stored in /var/log/mysqld.log
httpd service /var/log/httpd/error_log and /var/log/httpd/access_log

you have to use different files and command to monitor different services and status. like
you can use last command to monitor shutdown, restart status or you can use monitoring tool like nagios, opennms to monitor servers.

thanks "sem007" for the reply. Well When I try to view /var/log/boot it show me message

Code:
# less /var/log/boot
/var/log/boot: no such file or directory
I even can not see logs of

/var/log/apport.log
/var/log/dmesg
/var/log/daemon.log

Kindly guide me how can I access log files of the said services.
