The best place to start is on your own computer. Try installing
VirtualBox (or any other virtualization software) on your computer
and make sure that you understand how it works.

Once you have the virtualization set up, you can start installing
operating systems. I'd suggest installing several different ones,
since it will let you see the uniqueness of each of the distributions.

After becoming familiar with installing the operating system, there
are really two paths you can take. You'll want to take both eventually.
One is to install Slackware, which will give you a better understanding
of the operating system. The second is to pick one or more services
and start setting them up. For example, you may choose to set up
dns and dhcp, or to set up a web server with php.

There are some good books available as well as websites that can
help you along with this process of learning. At some point you
will need to start working with real production systems. My suggestion
is to find a local charity that needs assistance. Donate your time
to help them. This will get you valuable experience from a group
that will appreciate your efforts.

Of course you may want to consider taking classes and/or getting
certification. I'd recommend starting on your own and seeing if
you like it. If so, then consider getting formal training.

Hi there,

Well that is a very generic question you have asked. Just like "I want to become a SuperMan" ;-)

I can give you some general tips because not sure what exactly you are looking for:

1. Play around with various Linux distros.
2. Use VMware so that you can install multiple OS in that and practice on that.
3. Think of it like you are managing your server and what are the things you would like to configure on it like companies do on their server.
4. Act like a Linux admin to be one.
5. Get a good book for learning the distro of your choice (I would have suggested some books if you would have mentioned the distro you want to work on). Anyways not a problem Google will work for your. You can find any damn information you are looking for on web.

And last but not the least a good system admin no only knows the distro on which he works or an expert on that but also know how other distros work and how they can be integrated.

I am working on the same situation.

I want to become a Linux System Administrator/Engineer. What I have done so far is just installing different distros, try to understand the differences between them. Thankfully there is VMware or VirtualBox so you can experiment as much as you want without having to buy another computer. Moreover, I believe it is crucial to understand and get into virtualization in today's market.

Tweak these boxes and set them up looking especially at TCP/IP, Network configuration, security, and buy some books. If not, just read forums and wikis. That's what I am doing!

If you want to go the extra mile, think about a certification. I am considering CompTIA Linux+ or LPIC1 to begin with. Eventually, I will get into RHCE because that's what we use where I work.

I really like the idea suggested here of using your time to help some charity organization and to set up their environment.

This is bad advice, because everything depends on where you are, your skills, and where the job is. Also, you are often paid for your experience...which (based on your posts and language skills), isn't that deep as of yet. A junior level of ANY job is going to pay less.

Hi pratapkumar,

You can be a Linux server admin, but it is not very simple task. There are several linux distos which you can use for learning Linux. I can give you some tips,

1)First Understand what is linux.Install it any PC.
OR
2)Select any VM.
3)Virtual box/VMplayer both are free.
4)basics and advanced tudy materials you will get from 4Shared.

Anyway you have to be work in any company to get good realtime experience.
Experienced Linux professionals will get good salary.

Good Luck man...

Aneesh.
