This depends on the context of what the new domain is for. There are many things you might be thinking of for your question.
1. Add a domain you can find locally as you use this linux system to access others.
2. Add an IP address for a new hostname in another domain.
3. Add a new domain to a DNS server hosted on this linux system.
4. Add a new domain to a webserver (e.g. apache or lightttpd or others) hosted on this linux system.
If you can explain more about what you are doing, I think you can get (better) answers.
I am confused by your question.
In my experience: Networks have domains, databases have domains, some games have domains, operating systems have no domains (except as pertains to the network settings, recognizing the domain of the network).
