How do I unpack a .gzip file?

How do I unpack a .gzip file?

When I use gunzip, it gives unknown suffix:
# gunzip he_pmd.2009-11-01.sql.gzip
gunzip: he.2009-11-01.sql.gzip: unknown suffix -- ignored

When I do gzip he_pmd.2009-11-01.sql.gzip, it creates a file he_pmd.2009-11-01.sql.gzip.gz

unzip gives an error, so does tar -xzvf.

TIA

I was trying some things using gzip and gunzip and ran into some behavior I cannot explain.

The simplest thing mught be to re-name the file with the more normal .gz suffix.
