How add disc to RAID5

We are running RedHat 8 on a Compaq Server with 3 SCSI drives connected to the smartarray5i (RAID5) controller.

As we need more space on the /usr/data partition we want to add a fourth drive to the array.

Filesystem Size Used Free Used Mount
/dev/cciss/c0d0p5 4.8G 1.9G 2.7G 41% /
/dev/cciss/c0d0p1 73M 9.6M 59M 14% /boot
none 503M 0 503M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/cciss/c0d0p6 3.8G 849M 2.8G 23% /usr/mainapp
/dev/cciss/c0d0p7 23G 3.1G 18G 91% /usr/data
/dev/cdrom 652M 653M 0 100% /mnt/cdrom
/dev/cdrom 652M 653M 0 100% /mycd

How do I start? What happens if I just insert the new disc?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi Fellz,
The first step would be to read this "The Manual", especially pages 32 and 59. You would need the HP Array Configuration Utility to do any of that. Get that here "The Software". After that if you used LVM then it shouldn't be too hard to allocate that free space. Here's some documentation on LVM "LVM How-to". I hope that helps. Good luck.

Ryan,

many thanks for digging out all those things!
I've read quite a bit in the manual and I think it shouldn't be a problem now. I just need to find out if lvm has been used to setup the file system.

Thanks again!

Hi!

I just inserted the new disc and tried to expand the array using the Array Config tool from the SmartStart CD.
The problem is: It won't let me add the new (4th) disc to "Array A" (RAID5) but puts it into "Array B".

The machine has 6 drive slots and 2 RAID controllers. So I guess the discs in slots 0-2 can only be assigned to Array A while slots 3-5 are reserved for Array B. looks like i have to replace all 3 discs in Array A wither larger ones to get more space. I'm going to order new HDDs now...
