Host Names For Apache / Web Server?
I'm just curious if it's acceptable / good practice to name my Apache web server 'www' as its hostname? I've named my web server 'www' as its hostname & am wondering if I should have instead name it 'web1' or something beyond 'www'? Obviously I can create a CNAME / alias from 'web1' to resolve www.mydomain.tld rather than web1.mydomain.tld.
Thanks for correcting me or any info. |
There's no reason you can't make the hostname 'www' but personally I keep the actual names different so there's no confusion. So for example 'www.company.com' might be an apache vhost on 'web01.company.com' ... it makes it easier to shuffle sites/servers around as well - depending on your DNS config you may find it difficult to move the site to a different server if the name matches.
