Help with server setup in ubuntu 9.10

Hi,
I am kind of new to servers and need help with setting up a server in the lab(for 4-5 clients). I heard ubuntu has a different server edition. But I already have ubuntu desktop edition so I was wondering if I really have to install a server edition for my limited functionality. If it is not required to install a full blown server and I can do with the one I have, how do I go about creating accounts for remote login?

Thanks in advance.

Actually saying there is no need to install the server edition unless you have something that is very very much valuable, server editions are mostly has stable bug free packages which are tested for long time unlike the normal edition which mostly has some cutting edge packages which may has bugs.

from my side i don't think there is any need to get server edition. ubuntu desktop is good OS.

Greetingz!
The "Server" edition of Ubuntu 9.10 comes with actual services such as DNS, DHCP, FTP, etc, etc. If you're setting up a lab so people can learn how to setup these services, then you will need the "Server" edition.

As for "remote login", creating accounts with the "useradd" command (check the man page first!) should suffice. From there, just have them use "SSH" (Secure Shell) to login for a command-line login.

You could also setup a VNC service on the server, and give the clients a VNC Viewer (giyf).

Good luck!
