Help setting up an FTP Server on Ubuntu Server 9.10
hi all, im just wondering how i can setup a good ftp server that works? can anyone tell me how to? p.s. my server is also a web-server:D

i am using gproftpd

sudo apt-get install gproftpd.
its a graphical interface to proftpd. Goes a great job if your not wanting to do alot of CLI stuff.

will that work on ubuntu server 9.10?

robertjinx 08-03-2009 01:41 AM

Try apt-get install proftp or apt-get install vsftp

jag2000 08-03-2009 08:44 AM

no it doesnt. unless your running the ubuntu-desktop along with server this way you have gnome.

if i go sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop, can i switch between server and gui interface?

jag2000 08-04-2009 09:50 AM

Jamie, not unless you change init states..

Jamie Kugelmann 08-05-2009 12:55 AM

how do i change "init states"?

linuxlover.chaitanya 08-05-2009 01:37 AM

You can change init states with init command. For getting GUI on Ubuntu you should run it on runlevel 2.

man runlevel should give you more info.

Jamie Kugelmann 08-05-2009 03:41 AM

what about getting back to text only interface what "init state" is that?

linuxlover.chaitanya 08-05-2009 03:49 AM

You should be able to check it with runlevel command. And then switch back to it.
But why do you need a GUI for setting up a ftp server. It is much simpler than most of the servers. You could set it up using vsftpd config files. Theres only one for it and quite a self explanatory one.
