Help setting up a proxy server
 

I am in the UK and my parents have asked if i could set them up a proxy server so they could watch bbc iplayer and itv catch up(they are in Spain).

Could anyone suggest any ways of going about this? Which software to use etc, I am assuming that one or two other relatives out there are going to want access every now and then as well so if possible i would like to cash some of the videos.

I have been running Slackware for about a year and can get about but am definitely no expert but willing to do allot of reading.

Firstly, please could you remove the commercial link in your signature, as it consistutes unauthorised advertising.

Secondly, IF you have enough bandwidth where you are, then it's really simple to just use an ssh server as a socks proxy. Install Putty on their windows machines, and configure a profile to ssh to your UK based system - probably using a shared key to avoid having to enter passwords each time. enable a dynamic port redirect in there, and that will cause putty + openssh to act as a socks proxy, with zero configuration on your side, assuming you have an internet accessible ssh implementation already. then they just connect to whichever local port on their machine, and woosh, straight through.

There are other alternatives though... have you looked at Zatoo?

I have a 1mb upload speed so i am hoping that it will be enough. Would ssh cashe anything? If not is there anything that would?

They are behind a linux server so i guess i could look into setting the ssh tunnel there to avoid putty altogether.

Well this is all about video streaming, which is never cached. You could look towards a squid implementation if you wish, but there are negligible bandwidth concerns from static content. I'd not be *too* sure about the upload speed, might be borderline.

I will give it a try and hope that my upload is enough. I was hoping to cache the soaps because i know my sis and mum will both watch them at different times. If this had been possible i was going to move the caching to their side to save my bandwith.

Thanks for the info i will give it ago here then get them to look for a dedicated server if needed.
