Due to the expensive licensing fees Microsoft charge I would like to know if it is possible to allow multiple users to be able to connect to an application on a Linux server from the users desktop (win7 or 8) over the internet. Could you please advise on possible applications or solutions as to what direction I can take to provide such a service.
Multiple instances of the application can be executed. I would like to make it as user-friendly possible to allow the end user to connect and close his remote app session.
In principle yes, but you'd need to tell us the application; it would make a difference.
Most apps across the internet have a web front-end, so all they need is a browser.
Hi & thank you for replying, its kindly appreciated.
If you can assist further I would most appreciate it. If you can give me direction as to the following, I will try my best until I succeed. Basically I am trying to accomplish the following
Install a Linux server
1) What version and platform would be most suitable? (I am fond of Ubuntu/Server)
2) Would Vmware be best suited to allow multiple users with windows based machines to access the application remotely?
The application is a java,PostgreSQL driven application which I have been presently using on Windows, however the 3rd party that owns the software has informed me that they can install the application on Linux. Unlimited instances can be executed concurrently (currently working successfully with Windows Server 2012/Vmware). However the high costs associated with acquiring a Windows Unlimited Server License & additional licenses (which will in fact only allow 25 users + additional licenses) is not economically viable, since I only want my clients to access the application and not have access to a full fledged remote desktop or any other data on the server.
Even though what I have queried has been explained very briefly, If you can please give me an outline as to what approach I can take to obtain the necessary know how/experience I would be very grateful.
Why not contact your application vendor and ask them for their recommendations / supported platforms?
If you're looking to run and present a specific commercial application to users then they would be the best ones to know what your hardware / distribution requirements are.
As an aside, I can't imagine why you think you'd need VMware, at least as the situation is described.
Linux can handle many cxns, its only the App that might limit that, although unless its a MSDOS app, I'd expect that not to be an issue.
