help diagnosing why NFS won't start on kFreeBSD

Ok, so i'm trying to get NFS set up and running and i've hit some issues. i've already created a bug report but i think it's a bit vague to get anywhere to be honest.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=686013

so basically nfsd won't start, and i'm trying to gain some understanding of why. it fails silently so i don't get an error, so i'm assuming it should be in a log file somewhere? can anyone point me in the direction of log files to examine?
