Unhappy GUI through NX in Redhat Enterprise linux

We have a server running on RH Enterprise linux. The problem is some of the people using it are finding it difficult to use shell.

We are trying to load a GUI (GNOME preferably) using NX so that it is easier to do some operations such as moving files starting and stopping system services etc. The problem is none of the modules of the GUI are installed in the server. I couldn't even find startx or yum in their locations.

How do I approach this problem? Can I download GNOME, freeNX and install on the server and load them during startup? Is there any shortcomings in this approach? Is it possible for me to install fedora core's rpms in RH Enterprise linux?

Thanks.

You may be able to use fc6 rpms on an EL5 server, but it's probably not the best idea.

You'll find the number of dependencies is huge for a manual install.

Do you have yum working? If so,

yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"

will do it all for you.

As a wider question, do you really want people who can't manage to start a service from the command line, suc as typing "service postfix start" or whatever, starting and stopping services period? Moving files I can understand a little better (but not much). Why not look into midnight commander (yum install mc). You're talking about creating significant overhead for very little benefit.

It is more of a political thing.. And also, I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to learn.

The problem is there is no yum either. I guess I need to install yum manually.

I thought that may be the case.

I'd start installing yum - can you install with up2date? I use CentOS, so I don't have up2date myself

Please state /etc/redhat-release so that we know what version of RHEL you are using.

Do you have a valid subscription? If so, you should be able to install Gnome using the following command:

Code:
# up2date -i @GNOME\ Desktop\ Environment
To show all groups:

Code:
# up2date --show-groups
If you want to update from CD media instead, you should bild a yum channel and use it with up2date.

Thanks Brian

The /etc/redhat-release is

Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 6)

I used up2date to install GNOME and it worked like magic. Thanks for that. I guess the next step is to install NX.

Again, some more political stuff

Thanks again.
