groups and ftp window

I have a couple users who "belong" to more than 32 groups on a redhat server.. if they issue a "newgrp" command to access some less frequently used directories, then open an ftp window, the newgrp is not part of their permissions.. is there a way around this?
thanks for any help you might have..
