FC6 nfs problem

Hi All,

Wonder if someone could assist me with the following:

NFS server: FC6, i386 - here's the entry in the /etc/exports file:
/data/shared/music 192.168.x.xx(ro)
I can mount the directory quite happily but that's about it! :-)

On the client:
[root@linux-mobile ~]# ls -ld /music
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Feb 17 12:03 /music

[root@linux-mobile ~]# mount -t nfs -o ro linux-blast:/data/shared/music /music
[root@linux-mobile ~]# ls -l /music
ls: /music: Permission denied
[root@linux-mobile ~]# ls -ld /music
drwxrwx--- 82 500 500 4096 Feb 6 18:11 /music

[root@linux-mobile ~]# df -k
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda3 24221940 2612764 20358920 12% /
/dev/hda1 101086 10351 85516 11% /boot
tmpfs 127444 0 127444 0% /dev/shm
linux-blast:/data/shared/music
77528064 28036608 45489664 39% /music
[root@linux-mobile ~]# cd /music
bash: cd: /music: Permission denied

[root@linux-mobile ~]# umount /music
umount.nfs: linux-blast:/data/shared/music: not found / mounted or server not reachable
umount.nfs: linux-blast:/data/shared/music: not found / mounted or server not reachable

My initial thoughts are that the permission denied errors are to do with the user-id's, although I'm not familiar with how it works exactly for NFS, but I am pretty stumped as to why I cannot un-mount it on the client...

Right now I have the entry in the client's hosts file for the server, but I do not have any entries in then hosts.allow or hosts.deny on the server (wanted to make sure I could get it all working before tying it down)

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks for reading.

Cheers,
Mark.

Well,

I solved the umount issue. Placed an entry for the host in the clients hosts file, and vice versa...(d'oh!) Mounts and umounts work perfectly from the client now. But I'm still getting the permission denied error when trying to access the nfs mount on the client.

The directory being exported is owned by a user with uid of 500 on the host, this user does not exist on the client but it's mounting it as owned by 500:500. Wouldn't the expected behaviour be for nfs to map this to the nfsnobody uid of 65534 on the client, and thereby (I assume) grant access to the directory at the client end?

I added anonuid=65534 and anongid=65534 to the options in the exports file, but this didn't change anything...

Any pointers as to where I'm going wrong much appreciated...

Cheers,
Mark.

Fixed!

Amazing what a mis-understanding can lead to. My thought process for the way the uid's was mapped was the wrong way round. Set the anonuid & anongid to the owner of the files and hey presto, everything working perfectly. Now to put some entries in the hosts.allow & deny...

Cheers,
Mark.
