external storage for server

We have an old server that was given to us. It has four 37GB SCSI drives which is rather small. So that's RAID1 for the OS, but we need storage.

These are the devices available for use: 2 PCI-X 64bit/133MHz slots, 1 PCI-Express v1.0 slot, 1 FireWire, and 1 External SCSI Port. Here's "lspci -k":
Code:
root@server:/home/mingdao# lspci -k

I'm looking for suggestions to attach four 1TB Seagate SATA drives for storage. Tried a Sans Digital Tower RAID device but the driver for the eSATA card does not work with 2.6.37.6 kernel. The last one it mentions is 2.6.31 ... neither Sans Digital, nor HighPoint (it was their RocketRaid 622) could provide a new driver, so I RMAed the unit.

The two NICs are being used ... one for internet to the server, the other from it to a managed switch. We could attach something to the gigabit switch.

How many lanes does the PCIe connector has? FW400 or FW800?

I wonder, whether it would be better to buy a new mainboard/CPU/RAM instead of looking for any controller for this mainboard. It’s hard to get cards for PCI-X I think.

The PCIe has 16 lanes, and it's also version 1.0. It's FireWire 400.

Last night I came to the same conclusion as you. The cost of attaching
something to this old server for storage is more than it's worth.

Thanks for your reply.
