External HDD freeagent not detected


Hi ,

i have centos Linux server running with kernel version
2.6.18-164.el5 and release is CentOS release 5.4 (Final). The problem is when i connect external harddrive which is seaget free agent to this box, it doesnot detect . fdisk -l doesnot show any such partition.
Not sure why it is so? can you pls advise me as to what could be reason and how to let it recognize by this server

Run "sudo tail -f /var/log/messages" before connecting the drive. What kernel messages are displayed.

I could not able to reboot this after restart . Is there a way to boot this server? and It throws same buffer I/O error finally it stops with the messages kernal panic error and no longer boots after this.

I am strucked here . So pls suggest me a way to boot the server

Try booting up in safe mode. If you can, read the /var/log/messages file. Was a device failure detected. Put in your install disk, or use your BIOS setup to run a memory check. Also make sure that you don't have a totally full partition.
